It is well connected by road and rail from Chennai, Tiruchirappalli and Madurai.The University has more than 150 competent and qualified faculties and about 2000 students. It received fabulous grants from State Government, the UGC and from various funding agencies for research projects and innovative programmes. The Directorate of Distance Education was established in the University in 1992. The Directorate offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in the disciplines of management, computer applications, science, education and languages. 
 

The Directorate offers various innovative, job- oriented and socially relevant 62 academic programmes in the field of Arts, Science, IT, Education and Management. The Directorate has more than 1 lakh students on rolls at present. The Distance Education programmes are already on offer in South-East Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia; and in Middle-East countries. Viz., Bahrain, Qatar, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and also at Sri Lanka. The programmes are well received in the overseas market.

The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, an apex higher education body of the Union Government, has accorded its recognition for awarding financial assistance to this university since 29 March 1994. The University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India with five star status. The Courses offered by the University have been designed keeping in mind the changing times and the emerging needs of the region. The University offers post graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes ( Full time and Part time).

The University Act authorizes the functioning of the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education outside the university jurisdiction and the courses offered through this mode are recognized by the Distance Education Council of India. The Directorate has about 160 Learning Centres across the country with a commitment to extend the reach of the higher education carrying forward a pronunciamento “ to reach the unreached”.

All Academic Programmes such as, degree, diploma, certificate etc of Karnataka State Open University are recognized by the Distance Education Council (DEC), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), New Delhi, vide decision taken by the DEC in its 28th meeting held on 23 March 2007. It is regular member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Delhi, permanent member of Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), London, UK, Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), Beijing, China and also has association with Commonwealth of Learning (COL).

As of now KSOU assumes third position in the ODL system of the country. The Open- Distance-Learning (ODL) system is a unique and challenging mode of education offered at the University level.
